What is the difference between crystals and cubic zirconia?

I am not asking the difference between diamonds but the difference between these two.. crystals and cubic zirconia? When it comes to rings what exactly are the crystals made up of? To me they look very simular, but which is better? Could either of them break? Any info would be helpful!
